Nisse Bergman, b. 1985 - Norberg, Sweden

My artistic practice explores the relationship between information, materiality and systems of knowledge. I am interested in how abstract ideas, rules, measurements and codes can become physical objects, and in the unexpected aesthetic worlds that emerge around highly specialized forms of knowledge.

My working process is in many ways similar to the scientific method. I often begin with a question, an observation or something I find unexpectedly fascinating. From there I research, formulate hypotheses, make experiments and allow the results to lead the work in directions I could not have anticipated. Failure, deviations and unexpected results are an important part of this process. The final artwork is often less an illustration of the original idea than the material consequence of having investigated it.

I am drawn to the meticulousness of technical and scientific practices, particularly the ways in which seemingly abstract systems are translated into concrete procedures and physical forms. I spend a great deal of time gathering information from research papers, technical documentation, standards, specialist communities and instructional material. This research can become almost obsessive, but the accumulation of knowledge is not an end in itself. I am interested in the moment when it begins to generate its own questions and can be translated into an artistic process.

My research frequently becomes a physical experiment. I build tools and electronics, write software, work with industrial materials and develop methods for manipulating them. The resulting works can take the form of sculptures, machines, optical constructions, images or installations. They often retain something of the logic of the systems that produced them, while shifting that logic into a different context where questions of function, precision and efficiency become questions of perception and meaning. I am interested in what happens where an investigation does not necessarily need to produce a useful result or a definitive answer.

My background in programming, which I worked with professionally for around twenty years before studying Fine Art at Konstfack, is an important part of this practice. It has given me a way of thinking in terms of systems, rules and iterative problem-solving, as well as an appreciation for the peculiar beauty of technical solutions. I am interested in what happens where an investigation does not necessarily need to produce a useful result or a definitive answer.
